Press release

The law firm Squire Patton Boggs has kindly donated significant historical artefacts to the WA Parliament associated with Sir Luke Samuel Leake, who was the distinguished first Speaker of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1870 to 1886.

Sir Luke Leake's family coat of arms and a bible were gifted to Parliament in recognition of the Leake family’s significant contribution to Western Australia’s legal and political history. Sir Luke was a prominent merchant and public figure, whose pioneering family had migrated to Western Australia in 1829 and played an important role in the development of the original colony.

Prominent members of Sir Luke's family included his nephew George Leake KC, the third premier of Western Australia, and great-nephew Francis Leake KC who joined the law firm as a partner in 1926, bringing a collection of significant family momentos with him including the Leake family bible from 1823.

During a ceremony in early October attended by descendants of Sir Luke, Squire Patton Boggs Perth managing partner Tony Chong presented Sam Hastings, Clerk of the Legislative Council of Western Australia, with the original coat of arms granted to Sir Leake in 1877 by Queen Victoria.

WA Parliament is honoured to be entrusted with these unique and valuable historical items.
