Copy of letter No.10. from Sgt. Pilot Murray Wilson.
England,
Friday 10th October '41
It is nearly two weeks since I last wrote to you - I've been pretty busy but not as busy as that but don't think too badly of me.
The racket here is pretty good, as far as I am concerned the old Air Force can teach me all that it likes to and I'm really learning a lot. I said I had come here alone and I did too, but after about three days Charlie Hugall and Don Beaton turned up and they are at it too. Its nice to have a couple of the boys around.
The chap who is billeted here with me is quite a good sort - comes from Reading near London - but he talks far too much. At the moment he is out and I've got a nice quiet evening to myself so I am making the best of it. Apart from that little trait he is quite decent and I'm lucky to have him. When you realize that I've just been dumped down here in the middle of all this mob I could very easily have found myself sleeping next to someone who didn't suit me at all.
There are some very nice lads among the rest of the town and one of them - Bill Cooper - who comes from Glasgow - has invited me to have a look at a bit of his Scotland with him. We are going in two or three weeks just for a couple of days. I'm looking forward to it and it should be good.
Actually I am getting around this England fairly well for such a short time and it is jolly interesting. I am not going to miss any opportunities of seeing things but for the moment am well and truly stuck ehre.
I haven't found anything to send you for Christmas yet. We have very little time off when the shops are open and when you get to them they haven't got much at all. They haven't got in their Christmas stocks yet and of course anything in the clothing line is out of the question - no coupons - It doesn't leave much that can be got here and I think I will leave it until I see what Scotland has got and that means that you may not get it by Xmas. I'll try to fix it up before then but this is just to tell you why if I don't. I managed to get something for Mother and Father and posted it last Saturday. I'll try to find something for Rae too and I think just leave it at that. Arthur has just come in so things are not so quiet.
Last Saturday I took one snaps of this house and also again tried to put myself in something reasonably decent. However sameday service in photography is entirely unknown here so I've got to wait a week or two before they'll be ready. I just get the film developed now and pick out what I want done and get them enlarged. The small prints are not much use I got a cable from Mother yesterday. It was sent on the 16th. and arrived in England on the 21st. and I got it 18 days later. As you see the service this end is rotten. Its the fourth cable I've had - two from each of you and the others have taken 10 to 18 days to get to me after reaching England. I made a bit of a stir in the place this time but it won't do any good. There is probably more mail for me floating round the country somewhere and no doubt I'll get it sometime. Still I've done better than the rest of the boys. I've had a letter from Mother and two from you. I think they've all had cables but a lot of them haven't had any letters yet.
I hope that Judith has quite got over her cold and that it wasn't too bad. It's a bit futile to say that now as its nearly two month since she had it and it will be over three before you get this, but anyhow I do hope she is well.
I've generally made a serial of my letters but I'll finish this tonight and get it on the way tomorrow. Its against the rules to tell you much of what I'm doing but perhaps you already know. Apart from that there is very little to tell you.
I've been to a picture show here and tried to see a play - "The Doctors Dilema" - Vivien Leigh was in it but it was booked out and we slipped on it. Last night I spent at the mess with another of the boys. We had a few beers and a game of darts and two games of billiards - it made a jolly nice evening and we quite enjoyed it. Apart from that a couple of walks around here - its a very pretty spot - I haven't done much at all.
Now I think I had better find my cot so goodnight.
Received 17th. November.
