Dear Shake,
This is probably the last letter I shall date from this place as I have sold to a person named Liddelow for £1050, possession to be given on the lst of May. This is not as much as I expected to get, but still I think when I have settled up with everybody we shall be able to make a respectable start on a new “Run” with a herd of Cattle or some sheep. We have arranged for Ander to try the Murray for a time Sutton can get good crops there when other people’s fail and surely the adjoining land equal in every respect will do the same. When I have given up the place I am going to the Blackwood to look at a tract of country Frank has recommended to me, but I don’t think I shall take any further steps until your arrival. I shall remit you £40 by the Mail which will leave Perth on the 16th of May, but I do not know when it arrives in Melbourne as I believe our letters have to wait for the arrival of the following English Mail which arrives at the Sound about the lst of the month. The opinions are various about Woongong some think I have sold it well others that it was worth more, but when you hear all I think you will feel satisfied. When I remit I will request you to bring up two or three trifles for myself and Frank that cannot be procured here. To the Sound by the Mail steamer is your best course passage second cabin £13 and you can get to Perth by either Chipper or Toovey (£5) and if you are short of a pound or two an order on me will be the same as the money, but if a sailing vessel should be on the point of starting for Fremantle you would get up with your luggage more comfortably, don’t try as I did by way of Adelaide, the risk is too great. Poor old Bouglas came back to the Colony two months ago and was found dead in his bed at Murray’s a day or two since. I have been a long time settling matters, but when you know all you will see I have had rather an unpleasant and protracted business. I suppose you know old Sutton is dead, Henry S told me the other day there was not a man in the world he liked so well as yourself. He is just going to get married to Jane
McLarty.
Don’t be cross with me for all this delay, as regards the division of our late father’s property the circumstances of the case will clear me entirely I can sell anything and make what use I like of the money, but I must not give up possession of any of it for 5 years. I have written Bracher by this Mail two letters explaining everything. I suppose you will contrive to see them before you depart. I shall endeavour to be handy when you arrive, but should I not would advise your going to Anderton at Mandurah. If anything detains you after you receive my remittance be sure to let me know as I shall be anxious about you. I received J Turner’s letter and will answer it soon his friends are all well. The races are just over I was not there, Bibra had a valuable horse killed and Jas Guerin pocketted some £300. I have [no] time for more with love
I remain my dear brother
Affectly yours
HH Hall
