My dear Aubrey
We have been to Leicestershire on purpose to visit Shackerston & am sorry to find “Shackerston Hall” had long ago been pulled down & on part of the site several cottages been built, but the old church is very nice & in good repair, the living used to be in the gift of the Halls when the property was in their possession. Lord Howe to whom it was sold by our grandparents still owns it, at least one of the same name, but they have a magnificent Mansion about a mile or so from Shackerston. The last of our relations who lived & died there was a Clergyman, R.E. Hall, he died unmarried & was thought so much of that he is still spoken of as “dear old Mr Hall”, he was Rector of Gobsall & Vicar of Shackerston. An old lady who lives there has a painted picture of him, so I was told, by the present Clergyman, but who was away, so I was unable to see it. I had some photos taken of the Church & thinking you might like to have one am going to enclose one to you, in one of the Windows are the “Coat of Arms” of your family in colours on a white [?ground], in fact the window is otherwise all white glass with the exception of Lord Howes Arms, which are just opposite. We have had some nice visits to our relations in Devonshire & Cheshire but I think the English climate is about the worst in the world & I would not live here for the rest of my life if I was given a good annuity to do so. No! Australia is the country to live in & England to visit. We are at present thinking of going to Spain & Portugal for the worst of the winter
With love to you all
From your affect cousin
Amy Egerton-Warburton
