Charles was an apprentice seaman, on his first voyage, on the Ranee in 1853 on the England-India route; his father was the Master but died at sea on that same voyage. He was a Master himself by 1868, of the Scotia on the US trade route, and then the Australasian (also on the US route). He was examined in London for his Masters Certificate of Competency in 1867, but by 1871[1] he is no longer listed in Lloyds Captains Registers so probably had left the sea by then.[2]

He was born in 1836.[1]

3 October 1837 Stepney, Middlesex, England at St. Dunstans.[3]

Occupation 22 April 1869 (Everton, Lancashire, England): Full Mariner[4]

1871 occupation 'Mariner'.[1]

C.F. Barker Jr.'s application to become 2nd Mate, 1857

Married Isabella Fearon in June 1869.[5]

Married Barbara Lisle Charlton on 6 May 1879 in Monk-Wearmouth, Durham, England.

Master Mariner in 1881.[6] Residence, 3 April 1881, Sunderland, Durham, England, 47 Millum Terrace, Monkwearmouth.[6]

He died on 22 December 1887 and was buried three days later on Christmas Day in Anfield Cemetery in Liverpool.[1]
