My dear Fanny
I should have answered your kind letter of the 1st ult but I have not had a moment unoccupied I think I may with truth say. Leslie had a very bad attack of cold and fever with choking & great oppression about a month ago which greatly alarmed me I am told it was bronchitis then prevalent here, he is now well & I pray the Almighty he may keep so. There is no doctor here.
I have been so troubled that I have omitted to mention about the £1 pound note you sent for Alice, she went into the Asylum soon after & I considered I ought to have returned it to you if you will not be offended but we have been at so much expense first on account of Leslie's serious and prolonged illness and afterwards through his Father's distressing & fatal sickness, that I was glad to keep & make use of it for a time but I would return it to you now only I think you could not change a W.A.B. note without losing something on the exchange, so I must enquire first.
I have a kind letter from your dear Mother, she says your Aunt Theodosia has written to her about a head stone for the grave where repose the remains of your Grand-parents your Aunt L and my dear husband. He directed me to ask his relatives to give as much as they could to this object, but I do not think he would have liked your mother to rob herself under present circumstances and I cannot help feeling sorry she was asked to contribute. I know, my dear Fanny, you will feel gratified in offering a trifle towards shewing due respect to the memory of those who tho' long separated from you were still dear to you and your dear Mother but I beg you will not put yourself to any inconvenience or hurry yourself, I think the first thing should be to ascertain how much each individual will give and then we shall be able to judge whether we can collect enough. Your Uncle had for many years been frequently expressing his regret that his parents grave was unmarked & wishing they (the relatives) would subscribe for a stone, he had some railings made & they are now put round the grave.
You enquire about my plans for the future, when I leave here I am going on a visit to Mrs Sutton a kind neighbour of ours only a mile off. That will not be before the end of the year. I intend afterwards to board in some respectable family send Leslie to a day school and give lessons myself in music, French, or anything I can teach, as my income will be limited. I am a very good French scholar speak & write it correctly having lived in France in a French family for five or six years and was a good french scholar before I went. Having no instrument here I am out of practice but I can read music well & could formerly play and am very fond of it I had good masters. Do not think me egotistical. You remember you asked me my plans, & I could not well explain them without telling you what I thought I could do.
My nerves are quite unstrung with recent painful trials and I do not feel equal to the anxiety attendant upon school keeping. I never was very strong or capable of great exertion.
Accept our united love and thanks for your kind letter. I wish you a very happy New Year, may the future bring you health and prosperity is the heart felt prayer of
Yours very sincerely
