Dear Aubrey
I wrote you a letter a month ago, but it did not get into the pillar box (like Margaret’s) so I’ll just have to write another & shorten up the back news.
Your last dated 7th inst gratefully received, I was wondering what had happened, not hearing for so long. Thank you for your heartfelt wishes useful little gift, & kind remembrance. I’m glad to hear your news re Satirist, as it is the work you seem to like.
Don’t take any notice of my writing, as my hands are always full of deadness & pain. Ger Loulou & I came down on the 26th for the Spring holidays, I was thankful to get him away from the house, as he was worrying about the sale too much, it was turning up his face. Eva finds plenty to do & interest him here, he & Sam are clearing up a piece of land across the brook. Ger’s planting some of our own vine cuttings & he & Loulou are going to make a garden. Willie has dug 20 post holes & put in the posts, also helped Ford kill a pig yesterday, he is coming on.
Sam & Effie have let their farm, with the right of purchase to a returned soldier, they want a smaller place nearer Perth. Anderton is to go to Woodbridge this next term, Effie says he wants straightening up. She is taking him to Adelaide for the Xmas vacation. Ger is going into Bunbury to swear he is alive so that he can draw his pension.
I’m enclosing the old letter too, as there is not time to rewrite it. Loulou’s report is very satisfactory but Miss Brenton Coward says he weak spelling spoils her good work & she is afraid to send her up to the University on that a/c (its inherited).
Much love to you Helen & the children
Joy
I met Mrs Brockman at the C Cliftons. Cecily B’s husband was here this week with Mr Brain, he has bought the [?bull] Bennie (the former). Hope you have shaken off your cold. This strike is very serious (newspaper) [?Jac] Pilmer died in Broome a few days ago, fever & pneumonia, she was with Captain Gregory’s wife. Have you read [?Cappy] [?Ricks]
