Dear Aubrey,

I was very glad to hear from you because although I have a lot of Cousins up your way I have not had the pleasure of making their acquaintance. I fancy I have only met three, and as it does not seem likely that we shall meet one another the next best thing is to know one another on paper.

The subject you write about in your letter is just as interesting to me as it it to you. And as I know next to nothing about my own family I hope you will let me know all you find out about our fore-fathers. I was only saying to Mrs Speed (Mrs Harry Carey that was) how I would like to have a talk to Uncle Shakespeare and get him to tell me all about my father’s people.

As you know my father died when I was nine years old and my mother never had much interest in our side of the family.

I do not suppose I shall be able to help you much in your search, but whatever I can do I will. Your father has I believe the original copy of the family tree which was sent to him after my father’s death together with “The Green Book” which as far as I remember it, should contain all the information you want. Well now I want you to do me a favor viz to compare a copy of the “Tree” which I am sending you with the original.

The copy which I possess was taken by my mother and does not seem very clear in places. Would you mind looking through it, and making any alterations necessary, then returning it to me. If you can do this I shall be much obliged.

I am sending you with this letter a copy of the family arms, there are six quarterings, that is the right term I think, although I am not well up in Heraldry. The copy I am sending you I made out myself and being unaccustomed to that sort of work it is not as well done as I should wish, but it will I give you some idea of the original, the Mater says it is a very good copy. You will see that two of the Quarterings have no names to them the original is very much worn and faded so much so in fact that I could not make two of the names out, but I will try to discover them later on. In the “Green Book” there were several “Coat of Arms” so you might be able to give me the information when next you write.

I am also enclosing to you two copies of the Chrystal you speak of and a few of the “Crest” which I got off a signet ring which belonged to my father. These are the only two seals I know of.

I am also sending a few scraps of information I got out of some old letters.

The mail is closing early tomorrow morning so I am writing this rather hurriedly and just sending you anything that came to hand hoping to be able to give you some further “data” later on.

I remain

Your Aff Cousin,

Leslie Hall

PS With regard to the note at the bottom of the Copy of Arms which I am sending you. If we only had some friend in England to go and get a search made and a copy taken of the Pedigree, it would save a lot of trouble.
