DESCENDANTS OF CHARLES FREDERICK BARKER OF COPENHAGEN
Charles Frederick Barker was born in Copenhagen on April 4th 1801 (or 1800). Born 1789 Whitby! His fathers name is unknown- was said to be the officer in charge of the Royal Armoury of the Danish Army.
Charles Frederick was named after the Prince of Hesse who was the Commander in Chief of the Royal Danish army- and brother of the Queen. He was said to have attended thje Lands Academy, a school for the sons of officers. At the age of fourteen he stowed away in a ship and landed at Whitby - I assume that he gave up his Danish surname - and took the name of Barker.
There was a family of that name who were ship builders at the time -tho' I don't know if he had any connection with them.
He sailed before the mast and became a master mariner and used to sail round Cape Horn to Valpariso. Two of his sons later sailed with him and they were present when he died off Cape Horn and was buried at sea.
He married Elizabeth Hezelwood (Born 1777) - daughter of Moses Hazelwood of Whitby, a master cabinet maker, recorded in the Census of 1851 as living in Flower Gate as a widower aged 74. Whose wife was the daughter of Francis and Isabella Mead of Staithes. Charles and Elizabeth had three sons.
1. Charles Frederick Barker married Isabella Fearon and they had several children including Charles Fearon Barker who fought in the South African war, later he emigrated to Canada but all contact with him was lost.
2. Joseph Bolton Barker - who married aunt Millie- their son Commander Harry Barker was father of Commander John Barker RN, who died in command of HMW. Ardent a destroyer attending the air craft carrier Glorious in 1940. John was father Captain Nicholas Barker RN, Captain of the survey ship Endurance before and during the Falklands war.
3. Thomas Henry Barker (my grandfather) born May 18th 1841, died April 9th 1917, aged 75. He was the secretary of the Liverpool Chamber of Commerce for 26 years, he married Mary Ellen Moulsdale and had seven sons.
The Moulsdales came from Hawarden (Flintshire). Mary Ellen was born around 1845 and died aged 91 on the 14th December 1936.
They had seven sons:
1. James Denton Barker, who became and average adjuster in Liverpool, three children (my father).
2. Charles Frederick Strangeways Barker, he married Phyllis Whickan, parents of Peggy Ray (mother of Jonathon Ray and a daughter) there were another two children.
3. Thomas Percy Conyers Barker, was a Vicar of Hempstead, Essex. He had no children. He organised the rebuilding of Helpstead Church tower- where William Harvey is buried.
